Newmarket Stats

This week racing returns to Newmarket - the Headquarters of British horseracing. The field sizes will be big and recent form thin on the ground. In this instance stats are important tools that can be used to find winners.

Sire stats will invariably be the most important tool you can use for those horses making their debut, or trying a distance for the first time, but trainer, jockey and owner stats can also help you find winners at Newmarket.

Sire Stats

Want to know which sires are the best at Newmarket racecourse? You can see this information easily all on one page here: Best Value Sires.

The Best Value Sires page shows the best value sires with runners today. It shows the sires with the best A/E 'value' stat at the top of the table, and the sires with the worst A/E value stat at the bottom. To see the sires just at Newmarket click on the Newmarket link in the options box at the top of the page. Doing so today will show this:

Best Value Sires at Newmarket

This shows that the best value sire at Newmarket with runners today is Street Cry(IRE). He has produced the highest A/E 'value' stat (means his runners perform better than the betting market expected) with Elusive City producing the next highest A/E.

Street Cry(IRE) runners today include Mawasem in the 2:25, Mighty Ambition and Hill Street. If you know nothing else about the race, and just purely rely on the sire stats at Newmarket, then these three horses could be the best value ones to back today.

But you may want to also check the Best Value Trainers and the Best Value Jockeys pages to check if those horses are ridden by poor value jockeys, or trained by overbet trainers!

Trainer Stats

You can use the Best Value Trainers page as stated above but do you want to dig deeper and uncover stats such as:

  • Trainer with highest strike rate in Group races at Newmarket
  • Best value trainer with debutantes at Newmarket in the spring

To analyse deeper stats the best resource is the Stats Tables. You can use this table to produce a leader board type report showing the best and worst trainers, sires, jockeys, even damsires. You can also filter the results to match any race type or condition.

Load up the Stats Tables and set the form up as follows:

  • Item: Trainers
  • Sorty By: A/E Index
  • Course: Newmarket
Newmarket Best Trainers

If you click the Generate Report button straight away you will see a long table showing the record of every trainer that has had at least 100 runners at Newmarket in the past 10 years.

At the top of the table you will see that the best value trainers include J R Best (13% strike rate, 1.72 A/E, 73% profit), Mahmood Al Zarooni (23%, 1.47, 100%) and P D Evans! (10%, 1.31, 3%).

That table shows around 70 trainers (it will show hundreds if you lower the Minimum Runs Threshold) but which trainers have runners there today? To find out just click the Filter for Today's Card option on the form:

Filter Report for Today's Racecard

Now click the Generate Report button and the report will show the same leader board table but only for trainers that have runners there today. Here is the full list:

Newmarket Best Trainers with Runners Today

These trainers have had at least 100 runners at Newmarket in the past 10 years. They are ranked by A/E 'value' stat with the best ones at the top, and the worst value ones at the bottom.

At the top of the table are Mahmood Al Zarooni and Roger Charlton who both have good strike rates, decent A/E and ROI figures. The worst value trainer at Newmarket with runners today is Richard Fahey. He has had just a 4% strike rate there, has the lowest A/E and has returned the biggest level stakes loss!

Best value trainer with debutantes at Newmarket

This next example shows how powerful the Stats Tables can be. You can produce a report for any condition, such as horses making their first ever racecourse debut at Newmarket.

Go back to the form and set it up as follows:

  • Item: Trainers
  • Sorty By: A/E Index
  • Course: Newmarket
  • Runs: 0 to 0

This is the same Newmarket Trainers leader board as generated earlier but now we have added another filter for Horse Details -> Runs: 0 to 0. What this means is that the horse has had 0 career runs (we want to find debutantes, or First Time Out horses). Now click Generate Report and you will instantly see the best and worst trainers for introducing a horse to racing at Newmarket.

Note that the number of trainers displayed will now be less (because not all trainers choose to send their debutantes to that course). In this instance you may want to lower the Minimum Runs Threshold to something like 75 or 50.
