Horse Racing Stats Tables

Part of the Where Can I Find? tutorials for the Flatstats website.

Q. Where can I find trainers or jockeys who have very low strike rates?

The Flatstats Horse Racing Stats Tables produce a leaderboard of strike rates which you can sort by best to worst. This will quickly show you which trainers or jockeys have poor strike rates.

The stats tables are quite comprehensive in that you can generate a report for trainers, jockeys, sires etc., filter the report for any race condition, and rank the report by strike rate, wins, A/E value stat or profit.

Here are some examples of the types of reports you can generate:

  • Trainers First Time Out Runners Strike Rate
See which trainers are the best and worst with horses making their debut.
  • Profitable Jockeys at Ascot
Rank jockeys by profit at Ascot. You can even filter for just Group Class Races at Ascot.
  • Best Value Trainer and Jockey Combinations for the All Weather
Find out which trainer and jockey combination give more bang for your buck on the all weather.
  • Owner Group Race Wins
See which horse racing owner has won the most Group class races.
  • Sire / Dam Sire Combinations
Produce a report showing the record of Sire and Dam Sire combinations.

This information is available on Stats Tables page which you can access via the Stats section of the Menu at the top of the page.

Season Stats

The Stats Table page has two sections. The first section allows you to generate a quick report for season stats. This is a report showing the leaderboard stats for jockeys, trainers etc. for the current season or for past seasons.

horse racing season stats

If you click the Generate Report button straight away you will see the current leaderboard stats for the 2009 Turf Jockey Championship.

turf jockey tables

As at 1st of November 2009 Ryan Moore is the current leader with 144 wins, Richard Hughes is next on 110 wins etc.

Advanced Stats Tables

This is the section we will use to generate reports for low strike rate trainers and jockeys. This section shows the standard Flatstats report filter options where you can filter for type of race, date, course etc.

To generate a report showing all trainers with low strike rates in general set the form up as follows:

advanced horse racing stats

What this will do is generate a report for trainers sorted by strike rate. The threshold of 100 means that only trainers who have had at least 100 runs will be included in the report. If you set the threshold too low then the report will be bigger and include trainers with low sample sizes. This will include trainers who rarely have runners on the flat such as Jumps trainers, or trainers from overseas.

Now press the Generate Report buttom to see the report.

advanced trainer stats

This shows the best trainers for strike rate on the flat turf for the past 10 years. At the top of the table is Saeed bin Suroor with a strike rate of 23%. Second on the table is Sir Mark Prescott with a strike rate of 22%.

We want to see trainers with the lowest strike rates though so either sort the table by ascending strike rate by clicking on the Win% / W% heading in the table, or just scroll down the bottom of the table to see the trainers with the lowest strike rates.

low strike rate trainer stats

Right at the bottom of the table is trainer B W Murray. In the past 10 years he has not had any winners from 109 runners on the flat turf. Also at the bottom of the table are trainers such as Norma Macauley (retired). She was not renowned for having winners on the flat turf but she was quite adept at landing a gamble or two on the all weather.

Filter for Specific Race Conditions

The report above shows the strike rate for all trainers in all races. If you want to find out which trainers are the best for first time out runners you can filter the report for that race condition.

Trainers First Time Out Runners Strike Rate

Using the same settings as above (Trainers, 100 threshold, sort by Strike Rate) just change the following on the report:

first time out trainer stats

Scroll down the Horse Details, Last Ran section and either set the figures from 0 to 0 or just click the First Time Out link. This will filter the results to only include trainers who are running a horse for the first time on the flat. If you now Generate the Report you will see a table for Trainers with First Time Out runners.

Currently the best trainer for first time out runners is David Loder with Saeed bin Suroor in second place.

Right at the bottom of the table (or the top if you sorted in ascending order!) are the trainers with the worst records for first time out runners. Currently this includes:

  • M Blanshard 1%
  • S C Williams 1%
  • N Tinkler 1%
  • M H Tompkins 2%
  • M W Easterby 2%

Now you may be wondering: "How can I find out when Tinkler, Tompkins, or Easterby send out horses on the debut?" You may decide that these trainers are great laying material with first time out runners so you want to be alerted as to when they have such a runner.

If you click on the trainers name in the table a new window will open up with their trainer stats already loaded! You can now filter this trainer stats page for first time out (scroll down to Horse Details and set Last Ran from 0 to 0) and then generate that report.

e.g. Click on M W Easterby in the leaderboard list and look at the Trainer Stats page which has now opened. Set that form up for first time out and click Generate Report on that page.

This will now show Easterby's full stats for first time out runners. You can see his first time out record over the years, with different prices, at specific courses etc. If you like the stats and want to create an alert just fill in the details at the top of the report (Flatstats subscribers only).

Profitable Jockeys at Ascot

It is always a good idea to reload the Stats Table page when changing from one report to another. This is to ensure that you do not leave in a filter from previous research. Just click on the Stats Tables link in the menu to reload the page with the default settings.

To see which jockeys are the most profitable at Ascot just set the form up to show:

  • Item Jockeys
  • Min Run Threshold 100
  • Sort By ROI%
  • Course Ascot

If you now Generate the Report you will see that Johnny Murtagh is currently the most profitable jockey at Ascot with an ROI% of 70%. Ted Durcan is the worst as he has a very low strike rate at Ascot. Currently his record is 4 wins from 168 rides, 2% strike rate and a 77% loss!

Only 29 jockeys are shown in the report due to the minimum runs threshold of 100. You may want to lower this to say, 50 or 30 to widen the report and include more jockeys.

Best Value Trainer and Jockey Combinations for the All Weather

To see which trainer and jockey combinations are the best value for the all weather set the form up as follows:

  • Racing Code: All Weather
  • Item TJ Combo
  • Min Run Threshold 100
  • Sort By A/E Index

The A/E Index is a figure which indicates 'value'. If a figure is higher than 1.00 then the item is underbet by the public and thus value. Low figures of 0.90 or lower indicate that the item is overbet by the public and tends to offer bad value.

If you now Generate the Report you will see the best trainer and jockey combinations on the all weather. Currently the best combination are Sylvester Kirk and Liam Keniry. They have an A/E index value of 1.38 which means that the combination tend to be very much underbet by the public. Now scroll down the table (or sort ascending) and look at the worst combinations. Near the bottom with an A/E value of 0.21 is the combination of Peter Grayson and Liam Keniry!

Owner Group Class Wins

Once again reload the form and do not forget to change the racing code back to Turf as you will not find many Group class races on the all weather.

  • Racing Code: Turf
  • Item Owners
  • Min Run Threshold 30
  • Sort By Wins
  • Class Gp1 to Gp3

We have to lower the threshold to 30 for this report as there are few owners lucky enough to have 100 or more runners in a Group class race. Note the setting for Class of Gp1 to Gp3. This can be found in the Race Type, Class section.

If you now Generate the Report you will see the owners who have had the most Group race wins. Currently the best owners are Godolphin with 88 Group race wins. At the bottom of the table is Mrs Fitri Hay with 0 wins from 33 runs.

Sire / Dam Sire Combinations

This is a really useful report for punters interested in pedigree research. The report will show the best combinations of sire and dam sire.

  • Item SD Combo
  • Min Run Threshold 100
  • Sort By Strike Rate

If you now Generate the Report you will see the best combination of sire and dam sires. Currently the best combination are sire Indian Ridge and dam sire Sadler's Wells. Together they have had 31 winners from 135 runners, 23% strike rate and a 21% profit. At the bottom of the table you will see the combinations with the worst strike rates.
